It is the terminus for all Circuit routes, the repository for all tax ledgers, and the final court of appeal for the Realm. To Northerners, it is often simply referred to as "The Capital," reflecting both its distance and its absolute authority.

• Description: A sprawling metropolis defined by warmth and light, in stark contrast to the grey stone of the North. The city is a tapestry of white-plastered buildings and polished limestone towers topped with roof tiles of ochre and gold. Strong walls ring the outer districts, but the city feels open, radiant with motion and the scent of spices, hearth-fires, and bakeries.

◦ The Upper District: The administrative heart of the city, characterized by broad, clean streets and the quiet hum of bureaucracy.

◦ The Craftsmen’s Quarter: A district of high-end artisans, tailors, and scribes who service the needs of the Crown and its diplomats.

• Key Infrastructure:

◦ The Administrative Hall of Records: The spiritual center of Valentian culture is not a temple, but this massive limestone cathedral of bureaucracy. Its façade is carved with restrained agricultural motifs (vines, sheaves, plows). Inside, it houses the Chamber of Northern Affairs and the endless rows of filing cabinets where the history and law of the nation are physically stored.

◦ The Crown’s Gate: The primary entrance to the city, flanked by tall spires and carved with the symbols of Marra intertwined with the Crown, signaling the state's reliance on, and control over, the harvest.

• Function:

◦ Standardization: Goldmere exists to ensure that a pound of grain in Brightsong weighs the same as a pound of grain in Haleport. It is the engine of the "Administrative Era," projecting order through the Circuit rather than through standing armies.

◦ The Ledger as Shield: The city operates on the Valentian belief that if a thing is recorded, it is real. It is the ultimate destination for the work of every Mediator.

• Founding:

◦ Goldmere was founded by Valerius I, the first sovereign, who unified the fractured eastern city-states not by conquest but by the First Writ, a treaty of standardised weights, measures, tariffs, and law. He raised the city in the fertile river delta to serve not as a military fortress but as the Archive of the Realm, and the Kingdom of Valentia took its name from his bloodline. The principle has held ever since: in Valentia, the State, the Law, and the Valerian line are treated as one and the same.
