J. Legêne

Building epic fiction in the long winter darkness.

“Environment is not backdrop, but force.”

The Ice Beneath started as a joke. After a twenty-year break from tabletop RPGs, I wrote 20 pages of character backstory for my first D&D campaign in years. My DM laughed, handed me a blank map of the world, and told me I could fill it out however I wanted. My character was a diplomat, so he figured I’d need the geography more than he did. Then he told me I might as well just write a novel. So I did. Then I wrote another one. I’m currently 25% through the third.

Somewhere along the way web design became a new hobby, which is why this website exists, which is why there’s a wiki, which is why there’s an interactive atlas. Some things just get out of hand.

J. Legêne is a Scandinavian writer and father of two who writes from the heart of the northern winter. Much of The Ice Beneath was written in early mornings and late evenings, shaped slowly and deliberately during the hours when the world is quietest.

His work explores isolation, endurance, and the quiet cost of survival. A lifelong reader of fantasy, Legêne is drawn to worlds governed by consequence — where the stakes are as physical as they are ideological.

His approach to storytelling is structural and intentional: systems matter, pressure reveals character, and nothing exists without purpose. By profession, he works in digital strategy, a discipline that reinforces his focus on coherence, long-form architecture, and disciplined world-building.

The Ice Beneath is an ongoing exploration of what holds — and what fractures — when the cold sets in.
