The continent of Ardynia follows a strict north-south gradient that dictates everything about how it survives.

  • The North: Seasonally hostile, sparsely arable, and frozen for much of the year. It is rich in high-quality metals, arcane crystals, and mineral craftsmanship.
  • The South: Temperate and supernaturally fertile, home to the Prosperous Regions maintained by the Marran Order.
  • Interdependence: The North relies on the South for food; the South relies on the North for raw materials and manufacture. This balance is the primary stabiliser of continental peace.

This dependence is not merely commerce. It is a survival pact, and it is the single most important system in the world. The South cannot maintain the infrastructure of its fertile zones without northern iron and Glacisse Glass; the northern populations would starve within a single winter without southern grain. Each half holds the other's life in its hands, and that mutual hostage-taking is precisely what keeps the peace. War would starve the aggressor as surely as the victim.

The arrangement is examined in full under The Trade Axis, which traces the goods that move in each direction and the choke points that keep them moving. Those choke points, places like Ashford and Duarn, are the system's pressure valves, and they are also its weakness. Anyone who can throttle the flow can hold the whole continent to ransom, which is exactly why a house that has learned to manipulate it is far more dangerous than any army.
