At a Glance

Type: Coastal Transition Hub / Maritime Port
Location: Situated at the absolute northwestern tip of the Southern Reach’s fertile zone. It sits directly on the "Frost Line"—the visible boundary where the supernatural warmth of the Chauntean plains gives way to the natural, biting cold of the western winterlands.
Description: Known colloquially as the "Wellsford of the West," Westgale serves as the psychological and physical gateway between the gentle agrarian South and the harsh, fragmented North.
Architecture:* The city reflects its dual nature. Buildings facing south are open, plastered, and warm, typical of the fertile zone. Northern-facing walls are built of reinforced, windowless stone to break the freezing winds rolling off the winterlands and the sea.
Function: Unlike the inland Valley Corridor (which feeds the capital), Westgale is the artery for the coastal and island territories.
The Northern Run: It is the staging ground for the "Long Coast" route—a notoriously dangerous shipping lane that skirts the coastal mountain range to reach the scattered Northern Islands of Dagoneth. Only the most skilled pilots attempt this journey during winter.
The Dagon Strait: It serves as the primary launch point for trade vessels heading to the southern archipelagos and the rugged, unmapped "Wild Lands" located across the Dagon Strait.

Strategic Importance: Westgale is the only port in the south capable of handling heavy-draft grain ships. If the overland Valley Corridor is blocked, Westgale becomes the only lifeline capable of feeding the northern population, making it a site of heavy naval fortification.
