Valegate
At a Glance
• Type: Fortress Town / Logistical Choke Point
• Location: Situated at the exact southern mouth of the Valley Corridor, where the flat, supernaturally fertile plains of Sunreach rise sharply into the foothills of the central mountain range.
◦ Strategic Position: It acts as the "stopper" for the Southern Reach. All grain produced in the south must pass through Valegate’s heavy iron-bound arches to enter the mountain pass leading north to the capital, Dagon.
• Description: Unlike the open, sprawling farm districts of Sunreach, Valegate is built for defense and containment. It is a town of high grey stone walls and reinforced storehouses, designed to withstand siege from the south. The architecture is severe and strictly Dagonethian—vertical, imposing, and devoid of the ornamentation found in Valentia.
◦ The Funnel: The town layout is designed as a literal funnel. Broad avenues from the southern plains narrow gradually into a single, heavily fortified gate leading into the mountain pass.
• Function:
◦ The Transfer: This is where the "Long Haul" begins. Produce from the fields is inspected, salted, dried, and transferred from heavy field-wagons to the narrower, reinforced mountain wains capable of navigating the treacherous Corridor.
◦ The Tithe: Valegate is the primary collection point for the Church and Crown tax on the southern harvest. It is essentially a massive, militarized toll booth where the Realm ensures its share before the food moves north.
• Military Significance: Valegate is the physical manifestation of Dagoneth’s "Sentinel Mindset". The garrison here does not look outward at an enemy nation; it looks inward at its own food supply. The town operates under martial law during the harvest season to ensure the "lifeline" to the capital remains unbroken.
