Saltpeak
At a Glance
• Type: Major Maritime Port / Naval Watchpoint
• Location: Situated on a rugged, hooked peninsula on the northern shores of the Dagonethian mainland.
◦ Geography: The town lies approximately four days’ travel northeast of the capital, Dagon, via the coastal road that skirts the edge of Lake Dagon.
◦ Strategic Position: Saltpeak acts as the "Northern Anchor" of the Realm. It is the primary deep-water port for the capital region, handling heavy maritime traffic from the scattered Northern Islands and the frozen commercial lanes of the Northern Sea.
◦ The Parallel: Strategically, Saltpeak functions as the Dagonethian mirror to Wellsford in Valentia. It is a common saying among mariners that "If Northern Valentians sail for Wellsford, Northern Dagonethians set their sails for Saltpeak."
Description
A settlement defined by verticality and resistance to the elements. Unlike the sprawling, agrarian layout of Sunreach, Saltpeak is compressed against the sea, built of dark, salt-scoured stone and reinforced timber designed to withstand the crushing gales of the northern winter.
• Architecture: The town rises sharply from the harbor in tiered fortifications. The streets are narrow and steep, cut to channel freezing wind back out to sea. Roofs are steep-pitched slate, often white with frost or salt spray.
• Atmosphere: The air is sharp and brine-heavy, carrying the scents of curing fish, lamp oil, and wet stone. It is a place of "disciplined vigilance," where the Dagonethian Sentinel Mindset is applied to the ocean. The harbor is not chaotic; it is a grid of organized movement.
Key Infrastructure
• The Wonder (The Great Lighthouse): The defining feature of the northern coast. A massive, fortress-like tower of white stone rising from the tip of the peninsula. It is significantly larger than standard navigational beacons, serving a dual purpose:
◦ Navigation: Its light is magnified by a massive, polished lens system (often rumored to utilize imported Glacisse Glass) that cuts through the thickest winter fogs, guiding fleets safely into the bay.
◦ Surveillance: It serves as the primary watchtower for the northern defense, monitoring the horizon for unauthorized vessels attempting to enter the capital’s waters.
• The Salterns: Vast, terraced evaporation pools carved into the rock on the leeward side of the peninsula. These produce the high-quality sea salt essential for the preservation of fish stocks and for the "Long Haul" supply lines that feed the interior.
Strategic Significance
Saltpeak is the Logistical Gate for the north. While Dagon controls the administration and the lake, Saltpeak controls the open sea access. It ensures that the resources of the Northern Islands (whale oil, rare ores, cold-water fish) can reach the capital even when the overland roads are threatened by heavy winter snows.
