Litenne
At a Glance
• Location: Situated in the fertile interior of the Southern Reach.
◦ Geography: Litenne acts as a logistical pivot in the eastern sector of the plains. It lies exactly one day’s journey south of Rhian (the textile hub in the foothills) and two days’ journey east of Gardenne (the coastal resort).
◦ Strategic Position: Unlike the "Long Haul" north through the Valley Corridor, the road passing through Litenne is a route of internal commerce and relief. It connects the industrial intensity of the processing towns (Rhian, Valegate) with the restorative resources of the coast (Gardenne).
• Nomenclature: Officially mapped as Litenne, it is universally referred to by locals and travelers as "Little." This moniker reflects its status as a modest, functional pause between more significant destinations. In the shadow of Sunreach (the Breadbasket) and Rhian (the Industry), Litenne is defined by being small, quiet, and necessary.
Description
A settlement defined by the "humility of function." Litenne lacks the vertical stone fortifications of Valegate or the sprawling districts of Sunreach. It is a town of low timber buildings, thatched roofs, and wide, packed-earth streets designed to accommodate wagons turning around rather than armies marching through.
• Atmosphere: The air here is thick with the scent of unwashed wool, hay, and simple cooking fires. It feels "lived in" rather than managed. Travelers describe it as the place where the Dagonethian "Sentinel Mindset" relaxes slightly—not out of negligence, but because Litenne is too small to be a primary target.
• The Roadside Economy: The town exists primarily to service the road. Its center is dominated by large, drive-through stables, wheelwrights, and inns that prioritize hot food and soft beds over privacy or luxury.
Function & Economy
• The "Soft" Supply Chain: While the heavy grain wagons move north to the capital, the road through Litenne handles the "secondary" logistics of the Realm. It moves finished cloth from Rhian down to the wealthy estates of the coast and moves fresh fish and salt from Gardenne up to the inland workers.
• Subsistence Farming: The fields surrounding "Little" are fertile (benefiting from the Chauntean Stabilization), but they are worked by families rather than the massive guild-collectives of Sunreach. They produce the varied, perishable crops that don't survive the trip to the capital but sustain the local population—root vegetables, poultry, and orchard fruits.
Cultural Significance
• "The Pause": Culturally, Litenne is understood as a place to breathe. For merchants traveling from the noise of Rhian’s looms to the expense of Gardenne’s springs, Little offers a night of quiet, affordable rest.
• The Small Covenant: The local interpretation of the Dagonethian Covenant is less martial than in the north. Here, "Right Action" is defined by hospitality and the maintenance of the road. To leave a rut unfilled in Litenne is considered a moral failing; to refuse a traveler water is a sin against the land.
