Lakeview

locations Record

• • Type: Interior Resort / Tactical Staging Ground
• • Location: Situated inland, exactly two to three days’ travel north/northwest of River’s End by road.

Geography:

The settlement occupies a narrow, defensible strip of land sandwiched between the massive freshwater body known as Silver-Mirror Lake to the east and the dense, imposing treeline of the Ironwood Expanse to the west.

Connectivity:

• It acts as the primary "Gateway to the Interior." The relatively open road from River’s End terminates here, converting into the "Forest Road" that cuts directly through the Ironwood toward Lake Dagon and the capital, Dagon.
• • Strategic Position: Lakeview serves as the "Breath Before the Plunge." It is the last point of open sky and reliable resupply before travelers commit to the heavy canopy of the forest route. Consequently, Dagonethian doctrine treats the town not merely as a leisure destination, but as a mandatory logistical pause to ensure readiness for the journey north.

Description

• Often referred to by travelers as "The Gardenne of the Midlands," Lakeview offers a psychological and physical respite within the disciplined Realm of Dagoneth. However, unlike the coastal openness of Gardenne, Lakeview is defined by "protected seclusion."
• • Architecture: Buildings are constructed of polished timber and dark mountain stone, designed with wide porches and heavy eaves to shelter travelers from the mountain winds while allowing views of the lake.
• • Atmosphere: The town possesses a "militant tranquility." It is peaceful, not because it is soft, but because it is heavily secured. The air smells of pine resin, cold fresh water, and woodsmoke. There is no rowdiness here; rest is treated as a discipline essential for the road ahead.

Key Infrastructure

• • The Silver Promenade: A paved walkway along the lakeshore where merchants and couriers walk to settle their nerves. By local tradition, it is considered bad luck to speak of business, war, or schedules while walking the stones; only silence or rest is permitted here.
• • The Guild of Escorts: A specialized hiring hall located near the western treeline. In keeping with Dagonethian culture (which values chain-of-command over mercenary opportunism), these guards are not freelancers barking for coin. They are uniformed, licensed professionals—often retired military. They do not impose their services; they stand ready, silent and equipped, allowing the traveler to approach them to negotiate safe passage through the Ironwood.
Cultural Significance
The Clarity Check: While Gardenne offers culinary luxury, Lakeview offers clarity. It is culturally understood as the place where Dagonethian nobility and couriers stop to organize their thoughts and align their intent before presenting themselves at the High Stewardship in Dagon. To arrive in the capital exhausted or disheveled is seen as a failure of planning; Lakeview exists to prevent that failure.
