Kaldun: The Iron RootClassification: Sovereign Dwarven Enclave / Subterranean Logistics Hub

At a Glance

Location: The western geographic boundary of Halmar’s Clearing, bordering the foot of The Spine (The Northern Ridges).

I. Surface Interface (The Threshold)

Visual Anchor: A monolithic entrance cut directly into the granite face of the mountain. The stonework is aggressively geometric—squared, precise, and totally devoid of ornamentation. It is not designed to impress; it is designed to bear weight.
The "Black Gate": The entrance is technically open—no physical door is visible from the clearing—but the interior is swallowed by absolute darkness. Natural light does not penetrate past the first ten yards, and torches carried by non-dwarves seem to dim significantly upon crossing the threshold.
The Exclusion Principle: Binary Canon (Strict). No human has ever stepped beyond the Threshold Antechamber. Trade is conducted on a massive stone slab just outside the entrance. The Dwarves do not invite guests; they process transactions.

II. The "Continental Lattice" Theory

The Rumor: Surface lore and academic speculation suggest Kaldun is not merely a city, but a Terminal. It is widely believed that the hold connects to a pre-human subterranean highway system running beneath The Spine, potentially linking the Crownlands to the frozen northern coasts or even the western ocean bordering Dagoneth.
• Logistical Evidence:
The Mineral Anomalies: Dwarves in Halmar’s Clearing occasionally trade ores and salts that are geographically impossible to source from The Spine (e.g., deep-sea basalt or salts found only in the far west).
Winter Resilience: During the harshest winters, when surface roads are impassable and Halmar’s Clearing faces famine, the Dwarves never appear gaunt. They maintain a caloric surplus that implies a supply line unaffected by surface weather.

III. Political Stance: The Anchor

Relationship with Halmar’s Clearing: Symbiotic but unsentimental. The Dwarves defended the Clearing during the recent raids not out of affection for humans, but because the Clearing acts as a "buffer zone" for their ventilation shafts and surface water intakes.
Tactical Doctrine: In the event of a total surface collapse (e.g., The Architect’s victory), the Dwarves would not fight to the death. They would simply retreat inside, seal the mountain, and wait for the humans to die off. They are patient. They think in geological time.

IV. Known Inhabitants (Surface Contact)

Role: "Surface Liaison."
Current Representative: Unnamed in the human tongue; referred to in town records by the ledger-mark "Iron-Shod." (Identified as the dwarf who fought alongside Mediator Glacisse and Aethelmar during the raid).
Function: Coordinates the joint defense of the perimeter and manages the essential barter of surface grain for subterranean metal.
