Hillmere
At a Glance
• Type: Inland Forestry Village / Transition Settlement
• Location: Situated in the rising foothills south of Eastbend and north of Gwynned. It lies inland from the river, nestled where the open farmland of the capital valley gives way to the "thickening trees" of the central forests.
◦ Strategic Position: Hillmere serves as the gateway to the wooded interior. It is the last point of open horizons before the road narrows into the dense canopy that characterizes the route to Gwynned and Halmar's Clearing.
Description
A quiet, vertical settlement built into the gentle slope of the rising land. Unlike the river towns, Hillmere turns its back on the water and looks toward the woods.
• Architecture: Constructed primarily of rough-hewn timber and fieldstone. The buildings are sturdy and insulated against the shade of the forest, with steep slate roofs to shed the debris of the trees.
• Atmosphere: The air here is cooler than in the valley, carrying the scent of pine resin, sawdust, and charcoal. It is a town of "early risers and early nights," governed by the light of the sun rather than the lanterns of the city.
Function & Economy
• The Timber Gate: Hillmere acts as a collection point for the lumber and charcoal produced in the minor woodlands nearby. It supplies the fuel and building materials for the river towns that have no forests of their own.
• The Waypoint: For the Circuit, it is a "soft stop"—a place to rest horses and repair wheels before committing to the harder, lonelier roads leading south to the Municipal Library at Gwynned.
