Hearthfire
At a Glance
• Type: Maritime Watch / Fishing Outpost
• Location: Situated at the extreme tip of the rocky peninsula that forms the western curve of the Bay of Sun’s Reach. It lies diametrically opposite Sunreach across the water, projecting directly into the turbulent currents of the Dagon Strait.
◦ Strategic Position: Hearthfire acts as the "Gatekeeper" of the Southern Reach. While Sunreach is the breadbasket, Hearthfire is the shield. It monitors the Dagon Strait for threats emerging from the unmapped "Wild Lands" to the west or unauthorized traffic attempting to enter the bay from the open ocean.
Description
A settlement defined by wind and salt. Unlike the sprawling, flat agrarian districts of the mainland, Hearthfire is compact and vertical, built into the leeward side of the peninsula's cliffs to escape the gales of the Strait.
◦ Architecture: Constructed of heavy Dagonethian timber and reinforced stone, bleached white by salt spray. The buildings are clustered tight for warmth, connected by steep stairways cut directly into the rock.
◦ Atmosphere: The town possesses a "militant domesticity." It is a fishing town, but one governed by the Sentinel Mindset. Nets are mended with the same precision as armor; watch schedules are adhered to with religious fervor.
Key Infrastructure
◦ The Hearth (The Great Beacon): A massive, stone-shielded brazier located at the highest point of the peninsula. It is kept burning night and day, serving a dual purpose: a lighthouse for grain ships navigating the treacherous currents of the Strait, and a signal fire to warn the interior of naval threats.
◦ The Lower Docks: Located in a natural cove on the bay side of the peninsula, sheltered from the Strait's violence. Here, the local fleet lands catches of deep-ocean fish that are salted and sent east to Sunreach to supplement the grain diet of the Long Haul.
Function
◦ The "Salt Tithe": While Sunreach provides the grain for the Realm, Hearthfire provides the preservation agents (sea salt and fish oil) necessary for the "Long Haul" north to the capital.
◦ Spiritual Role: The town is culturally dedicated to the "Vigil." The inhabitants view themselves as the first line of defense for the Chauntean Blessing resting on the plains behind them. To live in Hearthfire is to accept that you stand between the abundance of the South and the chaos of the open sea.
