At a Glance

Location: Situated on the southern coast, exactly two days’ travel south of Sunreach (by road or coastal vessel).

Geography: The city is separated from the sprawling agrarian plains of Sunreach by a small, rugged mountain spur known as the Salt-Break Range. The road connecting the two cities hugs the coastline, pinned between the cliffs and the sea, making the approach scenic but narrow.

Strategic Position: Gardenne sits at the southernmost tip of the Dagonethian "Fertile Zone." It is the nearest major settlement to the breadbasket of Sunreach, serving as a relief valve for the mercantile nobility and high clergy who manage the nation’s food supply.

Description: Unlike the flat, horizon-spanning grain fields of Sunreach, Gardenne is defined by water and elevation. The town curves around the shores of Lake Oria (fed by mountain runoff) before cascading down toward the sea.

Atmosphere:* While Sunreach is defined by the anxiety of production, Gardenne is defined by the discipline of restoration. The air here smells of mineral steam and citrus rather than chaff. The architecture is open and terraced, utilizing white stone and Dagonethian timber, designed to catch the sea breeze.

Key Features:

The Springs: The town sits atop a geothermal aquifer filtering through the Salt-Break Range. These fresh springs are channeled into public baths and private sanatoriums, famously used by the Chauntean Order for convalescence.

The Lake: Lake Oria is renowned for its clarity and its stocks of freshwater fish, a stark contrast to the salted/preserved meats typical of the "Long Haul" north.

Function:

The "Fresh" Economy: In a nation obsessed with preservation (salting, drying, pickling) for transport to the capital, Gardenne is the only place in Dagoneth where fresh consumption is the standard. Its cuisine is famous not for complexity, but for the rarity of ingredients that have never seen a preservation jar—fresh greens, lake trout, and un-dried fruit.

Diplomatic Neutrality: Because it lacks the heavy industry of Sunreach or the military stiffness of the Valley Corridor, Gardenne often serves as a "soft" meeting ground for diplomats and merchants from across Dagoneth.
