Eastbend

locations Record

At a Glance

Type: Riverway Checkpoint / Tariff Station

Location: Situated east of Goldmere where the primary river artery widens and makes a sharp eastward turn before flowing toward the southern lowlands.

Strategic Position: Eastbend acts as the "First Filter" for river traffic leaving the immediate jurisdiction of the Capital. Because the river slows and widens here, it is the natural location for barge realignment and cargo manifest checks before vessels commit to the faster currents of the southern circuit.

Description

A settlement defined by "routine and water." Eastbend lacks the industrial density of Ashford or the fortifications of the border towns. It is a cluster of low, whitewashed buildings and long wooden piers designed for accessibility rather than defense.

Architecture: Practical timber-frame structures on stone pilings. The town is dominated by the Toll House, a structure that extends over the water to allow clerks to lower buckets for paperwork without boarding vessels.

Atmosphere: The town has the quiet, bureaucratic rhythm of a place where excitement is considered a failure of protocol. The air smells of river silt and drying ink. Disputes here are rarely about survival; they are about tariff brackets and mooring priority.

Strategic Significance

Eastbend represents the Bureaucratic Baseline of the Crownlands. It is where the Crown’s theoretical laws are first tested against practical logistics. If a manifest is incorrect here, it is corrected; if it passes Eastbend, it is assumed valid until it reaches the stricter scrutiny of the border.
