Type: Inland Settlement / Strategic Waypoint / Choke Point
Location: Nestled in the upland slopes south east of Haleport, situated where the main upland road narrows between exposed rock and dense pine forests. It acts as the primary gateway between the Valentian interior and the northern coast.
Description: A hardened, militaristic town defined by the "upland cold"—a dry, sharp chill of stone and earth, distinct from the wet river-chill of the coast. The settlement is built for endurance rather than comfort, characterized by low timber buildings huddled against the wind, storehouses set back from the road, and chimneys releasing thin columns of smoke that bend under the mountain gusts.
Atmosphere: Darkswell is alert without being alarmed. It prefers practical solutions to spectacle. The sounds of the town are of work: wood being split, iron struck against iron, and measurements called across open yards.
Key Infrastructure:
The Bridge: The town is preceded by a bridge spanning a ravine where water moves with stubborn insistence below. A watchtower overlooks this crossing, and guards stationed here control the flow of traffic.
The Meeting Hall: A broad, low-beamed structure near the center of town, reinforced with iron bands that look older than the building itself. It serves as the administrative and tactical hub for the region.
The Perimeter: The outer edge of the settlement is marked by a line of sharpened stakes—not a full fortification, but a clear "suggestion" of defense.
Strategic Function:
The Funnel: Darkswell exists because the geography forces trade through it. Everything bound for Haleport from the interior must pass through this settlement. Consequently, the road is packed hard with wagon tracks even in deep winter.
Defense: Because it lacks a massive standing garrison, the town relies on "pressure" defenses—patrol coordination, response times, and the discipline of roadwardens to keep the trade routes clear of bandits.
