The Spine
• Classification: Mountain Range / Geological Anomaly
At a Glance
• Location: Rising sharply in the central Crownlands, southeast of Ashford and forming the western boundary of Halmar’s Clearing.
Strategic Position: The range looms over the fertile midlands as a "jagged, frozen" counterpoint to the surrounding agrarian prosperity. It is not a trade route; it is a barrier.
Description
A range of peaks defined by "silence and rock," often referred to locally as "The Void." Unlike the natural ranges of the north, The Spine possesses an atmosphere of predatory stillness.
• Visual Anchor: The peaks are jagged and consistently frozen, even when the valley floors below are thawing. The rock is dark, often described as "ugly" or "black".
• Atmosphere: Travelers report that the wind here does not blow but "inhales," pulling air and heat up the slopes toward the peaks. The ambient noise of the natural world—birds, insects, wind in the trees—often ceases abruptly at the treeline.
Key Locations & Features
• Kaldun (The Iron Root): A sovereign Dwarven enclave cut into the granite face at the mountain's foot near Halmar’s Clearing. The dwarves here maintain a symbiotic but unsentimental relationship with the surface, using the clearing as a buffer zone.
