Every story in The Ice Beneath begins at the same place: a frozen lake, two boys, and a moment that should have been a tragedy with clean edges.

It wasn't.

What Everyone Believes

Adrien and Lucien Glacisse fell through the ice at age four. One survived. One did not. Their mother pulled one body from the water and held it until it stopped being warm, and she thanked the goddess for sparing the other.

The town of Mirrorlake recorded it accordingly. A death. A survival. The mathematics of grief, settled.

That account is almost entirely wrong.

What Actually Happened

Both twins went under. Both were drowning. The difference was that Lucien, the stronger twin, the first-born, had a body that was going to survive. And Adrien, terrified and refusing, did something that no theology in Ardynia Nova has a clean name for.

He displaced his brother's soul into the failing body. He took the surviving one.

The child who came up from the water wearing Lucien's face was not Lucien. The body in the ice was not Adrien. It was Adrien's body, now empty.

What the town of Mirrorlake buried was the shell of a boy whose soul had already moved on. The boy who stood at the graveside, holding his mother's hand, was the boy in the grave.

He has been performing the alternative ever since.

Why It Matters

Grace in Reflection does not begin at the lake. It begins twenty-some years later, when Lucien Glacisse, assistant and heir apparent to Northern Magistrate Vellorien, steps off a boat at Kelrun's Landing and arrives in a city where the ledger does not add up and no one wants it to.

The Mirrorlake Incident is not the story. It is the load-bearing structure underneath the story. Everything Lucien does, every choice he makes, every room he enters and reads like a balance sheet rather than a room full of people, traces back to a four-year-old's vow made in freezing water.

He is not cold because he lacks feeling. He is cold because warmth is a liability he decided, very early, he could not afford.

The Excerpt

An excerpt from Grace in Reflection is available before you commit to anything.

It covers the opening: who Lucien is, where he's going, what he's carrying. Then it delivers the Mirrorlake chapter in full. The lake. What happened beneath it. The moment Adrien understood, in Lucien's body, that his mother's arms were around him and her mouth was shaping the wrong name.
