Captain Rulvard Storme enters the story — a combat-hardened soldier who guards Haleport's docks with iron discipline. When a Crown courier carrying evidence against Trellivar vanishes without a trace, Storme and Lucien realize the enemy is far more dangerous than a merchant house. The city prepares for war.

The trap is sprung. Trellivar's professional assassins break into the eastern storehouse to destroy the evidence, but Lucien, Storme, and the Guard are waiting. In the chaos of the ambush, Lucien's entropy magic erupts for the first time — a kinetic shockwave that shatters one intruder's mind. The cost: he tastes river water and freezing death all over again.
